Coos Bay Oregon History
Coos Bay is the largest community in Oregon's Bay Area. Oregon's Bay Areaalso includes the cities North Bend and Charleston. The city of Coos Bay was founded in the 1850's as Marshfield, which was the name of the founder's hometown in Massachusetts. In 1874 the city was incorporated under the same name. Residents voted on Coos Bay to become the new name of the city in 1944. The name represents the Native American Indian history in the area. Before settlers took over, the Coos Bay area was home to several Native American tribes, such as the Coos, Lower Umpqua, Siuslaw, and the Coquille Indians. The areas plentiful water, thick forests, and other abundant resources that supported the Native American Indians for thousands of years made the area appealing to European settlers. By the 1900's coal mining and shipping became a significant part of the developing economy.
Serving as Oregon's largest bay, Coos Bay is a major commercial passageway. It is located on the coast of the Pacific Ocean, midway between San Francisco, California and Seattle, Washington. The area has prospered into a center for shipbuilding, wood products, and shipping. Oregon's Bay Area has always been recognized as a center for trade. Today, Coos Bay is home to 15,374 people, breathtaking beaches, famous sand dunes, amazing sunsets, endless forests, and fish-filled waters. Coos Bay is the perfect area for people of all sorts. Coos Bay is noted for having "one of the most spectacular coastlines in the world." Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area and Horsfall Beach provides residents and visitors with 40 miles of crashing waves, sandy beaches, and famous dunes. This locals favorite spot is located a quick two miles north of Coos Bay. Here people will be amazed by the famous dunes sculpted from ancient wind, water, and time. The towering, rolling dunes soar as much as 500 feet above sea level making them like no other in the world. Visitors of this must-see destination can enjoy off-roading with their vehicles, hiking, photography, fishing, canoeing, horseback riding, and camping. There are many other localized beaches and parks to explore.
As a desirable place for seniors to retire Coos Bay has developed a program for seniors called RSVP. The goal of the program for people ages 55 and older is to aid them in exploring volunteer opportunities to display their talents, make positive contributions to the community, as well as helping them connect with other seniors. 
Coos Bay is the home to the States third oldest museum of art. The Coos Art Museum's historical building is a former post office and is located in the downtown area of Coos Bay. Visitors are encouraged to take tours of the exhibits, attend art classes, listen to lectures, and participate in community events.
Children of Coos Bay attain a quality education by attending school in the Coos Bay School District. The District has three elementary schools including Blossom Gulch Elementary, Bunker Hill Elementary, and Madison Elementary. Children are then brought together to attend Milicoma Intermediate School and proceed to Sunset Middle School and Marshfield High School.
