Lakeside Oregon History lakeside

The Lakeside community was incorporated in 1974 as a part of Coos County. Lakeside is located slightly north of Coos Bay and North Bend. The focal point of this community are the Tenmile Lakes, which are two natural lakes divided by a man-made channel and are linked by six major creeks. The name Tenmile Lakes originated from Ten Mile Tom, a Native American Indian. In 1850, he built the first permanent cabin in what is presently Lakeside. The lakes are one of Oregon's few that open up to the ocean. The Tenmile Lakes are responsible for most of Lakeside's history and development. They made it possible to trade, communicate, and develop farms and homes.

Life in Lakeside Oregon

lakesideThe charming community of Lakeside offers a leisurely, waterfront lifestyle. Those who enjoy fishing will especially appreciate this small community. Lakeside has a convenient, charming shopping area with basic service providing businesses. There are lots of other activities to do and places to explore in the near by cities of Coos Bay and North Bend.

The Tenmile Lakes are the center of Lakeside action. The lakes are conveniently located about a half mile from Spinreel State Park, which provides easy access to the beach and recreational sand dunes. Spinreel State Park also has five of the lake's most abundant fishing holes. Salmon, steelhead, large mouth bass, trout, crappie, blue gill, and catfish are among the popular types of fish reeled in from the lakes. The Coos County Park, which is located on South Tenmile Lake, is one of the nicest free parks in Oregon. The park features launching ramps, two docks, ample parking for vehicles and boat-trailers, a convenient station for cleaning fish, a fishing pier, restrooms, gazebos, and a picnic area.

If fishing is not your cup of tea, there are vast areas of open water on the lakes perfect for water sports such as, jet-skiing, canoeing, water skiing, wakeboarding, and tubing. The Tenmile Lakes often host multiple fishing tournaments which attract large crowds of avid fishermen.

Lakeside is well known as the host for three major annual events including a July 4th celebration, Drag Boat Races, and a steam boaters gathering. If you are looking for nightlife, dining, and shopping, Coos Bay and North Bend are just a short ride away.

Children growing up in the Lakeside community attain a quality education by attending school in one of two school districts, which are the Coos Bay School District or the North Bend School District.
